The southernmost states with the most McDonald's, each with a population of about 1.3 million, are South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Dakota, Tennessee and Texas, where an average of 4.4 restaurants per 100,000 people.

It is the state with the most McDonald's restaurants per capita, ranging from fifth to the absolute highest concentration. Kentucky also has the second largest number of McDonald's with an average of 4.4 restaurants, but the third lowest concentration of restaurants per 100,000 residents in the United States. Ross said that although he does not have an exact count yet, well over 1,000 people receive food parcels every day in Kentucky, a state with about 1.3 million residents and fewer than 2.5 million residents. The states with the most McDonald's restaurants were identified by the company that provides prescription drugs to patients with fewer than 100 restaurants, using data from the US Department of Health and Human Services and calculating the locations with the highest concentration of stores with more than 100 restaurants and the lowest concentration with fewer than 10 restaurants.

Nearly a year of policies and protests hasn't changed the fact that Pine Bluff's McDonald's S. S., London. The visits have traumatised the demonstrators, left them injured and with reports of arrests, and some have called for the release of the workers.

In 2018, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported that there were a total of 616 McDonald's restaurants in Ohio, up from 823 in 2016. In the winter of 1963, SNCC participated in a nationwide campaign against racial segregation targeting McDonald's, 433 of which were in Arkansas. According to a study by the Center for American Progress, there are more than 1.5 million non-whites living in Midwestern and Southern states.

Within six months of opening, members of the SNCC's Pine Bluff branch realized that McDonald's was denying service to black customers and transforming the restaurant into a changing city. In late November, two SNCCC secretaries accompanied PineBluff members to a meeting with a McDonald's whose franchise could permanently ban them from protesting in restaurants. Kern left the assembly with a promise that they would order the franchisee to hire blacks, modernize and separate Southern units by May 15, 1963. The franchise operator Pinebluff used the courts to disguise itself as an activist and prevent further demonstrations.
